SUMMARY:Haunted History: A Look at the Victorian Funeral
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a specially themed Haunted History event as we explore the traditions and elements of the Victorian funeral. Rosedale resident Dr. David Caldwell (1799-1861) died the same year as Prince Albert\, husband of Queen Victoria –yes\, the very Queen for whom the Victorian age is named\, and whose mourning of her husband influenced funeral traditions of the time. Along with members of the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society (CAPS)\, the Historic Rosedale staff will discuss many of these funeral traditions -some macabre\, some sentimental – and lead you through our 1815 home as it would have looked during a mourning period\, as well as sharing stories of the ghostly residents who remain from this moment in time. The tour will be held both inside the house and outside in the gardens and grounds surrounding our historic home and reconstructed blacksmith shop. Spaces for this tour are limited for a cozy story-telling experience and to prevent\, as the Victorians believed\, the spirits of the dead from taking the spirits of the living with them!

SUMMARY:Paranormal Investigation at Historic Rosedale
DESCRIPTION:The Charlotte Area Paranormal Society (CAPS) is back by popular demand at Historic Rosedale. On Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\, visitors are invited to follow along in a scientific-minded ghost hunt of Historic Rosedale’s 200+ year old house and grounds! \nHistoric homes and grounds have long been rumored to be haunted. Historic Rosedale\, which dates back to 1815\, is no different. Using the latest investigative equipment (available for loan to attendees)\, CAPS will take guests on the search for evidence of “those who have chosen to remain behind.” \nThe grounds investigation takes place from 8:00-10:00 pm (with check-starting at 7:30). Participants\, broken into four groups of no more than 20 each\, will be stationed at various active areas of the site including the cellar of the 1815 home. This includes an introductory talk sharing the history and some of the stories of Rosedale’s ghostly residents. A separate\, more close-knit investigation of the house interior is available from 10:30-12:30 with space for up to 15 guests. Tickets for both events can be purchased separately\, and a limited number of combination tickets are available for both. \nExecutive director\, Deanna Witte-Walker states\, “October is the perfect time to discover the spirited past of Historic Rosedale. Come with an open mind\, and you never know what you might discover.” She continues\, “We are grateful to CAPS for their enthusiasm and knowledge.” \nHistoric Rosedale is located at 3427 N. Tryon St\, Charlotte. Parking is free. Advance purchase of tickets is suggested. www.historicrosedale.org.

Visitors are welcome to join as early as 7:00 PM (Eastern) for some informal social time. A brief business meeting begins at 7:30 pm\, followed by the presentation for the evening. SUMMARY:More Than 250: Tories and Patriots
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution was more than a war—it was a transformative moment for the people who lived through it and the generations who came after. More Than 250 is a thought-provoking series of panel discussions that explores the experiences of groups who lived\, fought\, resisted\, and endured in the greater Charlotte region before\, during\, and after the Revolutionary War. \nThis panel will explore the roles of Tories and Patriots in the Carolina Backcountry during the American Revolution. How did divided loyalties affect relationships? How did the conflict define the region’s experience? Join expert historians Hugh Dussek (CPCC)\, Bill Anderson (author)\, and Zach Lemhouse (Southern Revolutionary War Institute) for this thought-provoking discussion.

SUMMARY:18th CENTURY FAST FOOD
DESCRIPTION:With none of the luxuries we have today\, preserved food was often a staple for families\, especially during the winter months. What about when working in the fields or traveling? How and what did the farm workers\, the enslaved and family eat when working all day in the fields or traveling great distances? We will explore this and make a few receipts of foods they might have taken with them. Receipts will include cornbread\, dried meat\, switchel and hand pies. \nJoin food historian Susie Worchester as she explores this aspect of culinary history. Unfortunately\, visitors will not be able to sample\, however\, the history and the smells are free of charge! \nHours: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Admission: FREE! However\, a suggested donation of $5.00 per adult and $2.00 per senior/child would be greatly appreciated. \nVisit https://www.jameskpolk.net/events.html for more details.

SUMMARY:Public Housing: Some Surprising History with Tom Hanchett
DESCRIPTION:Historian Tom Hanchett delves into one thread of his new book Affordable Housing in Charlotte. We’ll start with the invention of subsidized housing in the 1930s-1940s. Then look at how a 1990s program called HOPE VI brought dramatic improvements — while displacing some residents. Finally\, we’ll ask how history shapes affordable housing issues today. \nDr. Hanchett is a community historian who works with neighborhood groups in Charlotte. Educated at Cornell\, University of Chicago and UNC Chapel Hill\, he is author of a history book about Charlotte\, Sorting Out the New South City\, as well as his new book Affordable Housing in Charlotte. Find his lively stories about Charlotte eateries\, neighborhoods and more at HistorySouth.org.
