SUMMARY:Mecklenburg Genealogical Society November Meeting: The Environmental History of Charlotte
DESCRIPTION:Nolan Dahm\, an environmental historian by training\, with experience as a park ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park\, will be introducing the idea of “environmental history” and talking about Charlotte’s changing landscape. \nNolan was born and raised in Des Moines\, Iowa\, and moved to Charlotte in 2022 where he has been at Charlotte Museum of History ever since. At CMH\, Nolan oversees the interpretation of the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite and Siloam school\, manages the education team\, and curates rotating exhibits. He recently curated the Meck Dec 250 exhibit currently on display at the Museum\, but he still isn’t convinced it is real. You can read more about his work at nolandahm.com. \nNolan’s presentation will be preceded by member voting on amendments to the Olde Meck bylaws and election of the 2026 Board of Directors. \nWe are currently meeting via the ZOOM web conference platform on the second Wednesday of each month. Visitors are welcome to join as early as 7:00 PM (Eastern) for some informal social time. A brief business meeting begins at 7:30 pm\, followed by the presentation for the evening. Meetings feature speakers and programs related to family history and genealogy research. The meetings generally are one hour long and most have an open Q&A session for the speaker afterwards.

SUMMARY:Haunted History: A Look at the Victorian Funeral
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a specially themed Haunted History event as we explore the traditions and elements of the Victorian funeral. Rosedale resident Dr. David Caldwell (1799-1861) died the same year as Prince Albert\, husband of Queen Victoria –yes\, the very Queen for whom the Victorian age is named\, and whose mourning of her husband influenced funeral traditions of the time. Along with members of the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society (CAPS)\, the Historic Rosedale staff will discuss many of these funeral traditions -some macabre\, some sentimental – and lead you through our 1815 home as it would have looked during a mourning period\, as well as sharing stories of the ghostly residents who remain from this moment in time. The tour will be held both inside the house and outside in the gardens and grounds surrounding our historic home and reconstructed blacksmith shop. Spaces for this tour are limited for a cozy story-telling experience and to prevent\, as the Victorians believed\, the spirits of the dead from taking the spirits of the living with them!
