SUMMARY:Hidden Hospitality: Untold Stories of Black Hotel\, Motel\, and Resort Owners
DESCRIPTION:Throughout America’s history of slavery and segregation\, Black travelers faced not just unwelcoming environments but the fundamental challenge of finding safe places to rest and recharge. In response to this basic human need\, courageous Black entrepreneurs carved out spaces within the dominant culture\, creating a vital network of Black-owned establishments that offered comfort and safety to Black travelers. \nJoin the Charlotte Museum of History for an illuminating evening with Calvin Stovall Jr.\, author of Hidden Hospitality: Untold Stories of Black Hotel\, Motel\, and Resort Owners from the Pioneer Days to the Civil Rights Era. Stovall shares the inspiring journeys of these pioneering business owners—revealing the immense challenges they faced and the enduring impact of their establishments. These spaces became vibrant hubs of Black culture where people could gather\, find joy\, and be their authentic selves. \nCalvin Stovall is the Chief Experience Officer of ICONIC Presentations\, LLC\, specializing in dynamic customer experience and leadership presentations. He brings nearly 30 years of experience in the hospitality and non-profit service industries\, including roles as Vice President of Brand Marketing with Hilton Worldwide\, CEO of The Soulsville Foundation\, and brand marketing strategist with ALSAC (the fundraising arm for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). He currently also serves as Director of Executive Programs at The Advanced Leadership Institute. Calvin earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University and his Master of Professional Studies from Cornell’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration. \nThis book talk offers a meaningful way to observe Black History Month and deepen your understanding of the untold stories of Black entrepreneurship and resilience during the Jim Crow era.

SUMMARY:Handsewn Doll Workshop with Margarette Joyner--A Black History Month Event
DESCRIPTION:Join African-American Legacy Project Coordinator and award-winning textile artist Margarette Joyner as she leads workshop participants in the art of crafting handmade dolls that replicate the ones enslaved women would have created for their own children. As Ms. Joyner states\, ” “Hand sewing is becoming a dying art\, but there are many benefits to the art form.  You’re using your hands and eyes in coordination\, which is great practice for other activities. You’re also working on fine motor skills\, which can be helpful for tasks like handwriting and using a computer mouse.  But the best thing about hand sewing is that it’s a relaxing activity. When you’re focusing on the task at hand\, you can forget about all of your troubles and just enjoy the moment. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from thinking about things and just work on something creative.  So let’s learn how to create a handmade doll similar to the primitive dolls made by the enslaved women of Colonial Williamsburg.” \nThe activity will take place in Rosedale’s kitchen cellar\, and seating is limited to 15. Materials will be provided.
