SUMMARY:Deadly Gold Rush: Stories from Charlotte's 1830s Gold Rush and a Modern Day Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday morning to hear from the author of the new history mystery: Deadly Gold Rush: An Indie Retirement Mystery. Landis Wade will discuss the real stories behind the book\, discuss his writing process\, and offer a chance to dig into the history of gold mining in the Queen City. After the talk\, join us on a guided tour of the 1774 Rock House – Charlotte oldest building – and see a cooking demonstration on an original kitchen hearth led by Janet Wade. \nSigned copies of books will be available for purchase at the event. \nMore information about the book: \nWhen a shady real estate developer is found murdered beneath Harriet Keaton’s family home—shot\, stabbed\, and surrounded by rare 1830s gold coins—her estranged twin brother Joey is the prime suspect. He insists he’s innocent…but won’t name the real culprit. With Joey refusing to talk and millions missing from the retirement accounts\, the future of the Independence Retirement Community is suddenly on the line. Now\, whipsmart Harriet and her sleuthing partners—Craig Travail (savvy lawyer\, reluctant romantic) and Yeager Alexander (conspiracy theorist\, resident rabble-rouser)—must dig into the past to solve the crime. Their best lead? A decades-old memoir from Harriet’s treasure-obsessed father and whispers of a long-lost gold hoard. But treasure has a way of attracting trouble. As fortunes vanish and suspects multiply\, the trio must untangle two decades of betrayal—before the killer strikes again.

SUMMARY:MeckRoots: Sacred Landscapes\, Living Descendants\, and Protecting Black History
DESCRIPTION:MeckRoots is an ongoing series of free historical workshops and presentations sponsored by Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation meant to connect the Charlotte Mecklenburg community with our history and our spaces. Seats go quickly at these events so please register here: https://anc.apm.activecommunities.com/mecklenburgparks/activity/search/detail/171323?onlineSiteId=0&locale=en-US&from_original_cui=true \nCelebrate Black History Month on Thursday\, February 12th at 6:00 PM at Eastway Recreation Center with a presentation by archaeologist and forensic anthropologist Christina Benton!\n\nChristina’s talk Sacred Landscapes\, Living Descendants\, and Protecting Black History in a Changing South explores how Black sacred spaces survive in the land\, in descendant memory\, and in overlooked parts of the historical record. Drawing from archaeological fieldwork\, cemetery preservation\, repatriation experience\, and cultural compliance work\, Christina explains what African American burial landscapes look like\, why descendant knowledge is central to interpreting them\, and how development pressure continues to threaten these sites today. The session offers practical steps communities can take to document\, defend\, and protect their own historic spaces\, including local landmark tools through the Mecklenburg County Historic Landmarks Commission\, conservation easements\, and early cultural resource planning. The goal is simple: empower communities with clear\, realistic strategies to safeguard their heritage before it is endangered.\n\nChristina Benton is an archaeologist\, forensic anthropologist\, and cultural heritage professional whose work focuses on African American burial landscapes\, descendant collaboration\, and the protection of threatened historic sites. She is the founder and Principal Investigator of Cultural Heritage Resource Impact Solutions\, Inc. (CHRIS)\, an organization dedicated to cultural resource documentation\, compliance guidance\, and community-centered preservation planning. Christina has worked across the Carolinas\, Tennessee\, Jamaica\, and the broader Southeast on enslaved burial grounds\, repatriation efforts\, plantation sites\, and emergency response for cultural resources. She also serves as a commissioner with the Mecklenburg County Historic Landmarks Commission. Her work centers dignity\, accuracy\, and the belief that communities should have the tools and support needed to protect their own sacred spaces.
